Between sessions

Your Body Is Always Communicating

Valerie Vazquez, Licensed Massage Therapist, Reconnect Massage Therapy, downtown Fort Worth. .

One of the things I find myself asking before the start of each session is:

“How’s your body feeling? What is it communicating?”

I ask this because the body is always communicating with us.

After many sessions and conversations with clients, I’ve noticed that one of the biggest shifts happens when we stop seeing our bodies as something to fix and start seeing them as something to listen to.

The challenge is that many of us have learned to ignore those messages until they become louder—through discomfort, tension, fatigue, or pain.

One of the goals of massage therapy is not only to help you feel better during your session, but also to help you build a deeper connection with your body between visits. When we begin to notice what our body is communicating, we can start responding with more awareness, support, and curiosity.

Listening Instead of Fighting Your Body

It’s common to think of muscle tension as something that needs to be eliminated. Sometimes tension is a sign that something needs attention, but often it is simply information.

Your body may be responding to stress, protecting an area that feels vulnerable, adapting to repetitive movements, or carrying the demands of daily life.

Instead of asking:

“How do I get rid of this?”

Try asking:

“What might my body be asking for?”

That small shift can change the relationship we have with our bodies. Rather than fighting against the signals we’re receiving, we begin learning how to listen.

Try This: A Moment of Body Awareness

The next time you notice tension in your neck, shoulders, jaw, back, or anywhere else in your body, pause for a moment before immediately trying to fix it.

Take a few breaths and ask yourself:

  • What was happening right before I noticed this tension?
  • Am I holding my breath?
  • Have I been in one position for too long?
  • Am I feeling stressed, rushed, or overwhelmed?
  • What does my body need right now?

Maybe it needs movement.

Maybe it needs rest.

Maybe it needs a few intentional breaths.

You don’t always have to solve the sensation right away. Sometimes simply noticing it is the first step toward creating change.

Why This Matters

Massage therapy is not about forcing your body to relax or “fixing” something that is wrong with you.

My approach is about helping your body feel supported and safe enough to release what it has been holding onto.

The more awareness you build between sessions, the more opportunities you create for your body to respond differently over time.

This month, I invite you to take a few moments to check in with yourself:

How’s your body feeling? What is it communicating?

There is no need to immediately change or fix anything. Simply noticing is where awareness begins.

I’d love for you to bring any observations, questions, or things you notice about your body into your next session. Your awareness is an important part of the work we do together.

Next month, we’ll explore the connection between your nervous system and muscle tension, and why relaxation is about more than simply feeling calm.

Warmly,
Valerie

Common questions about this

Does tension always mean something is wrong?

No. Often it is information: a response to stress, a protective pattern, or the cost of a long day. The question is what it is asking for, not how to get rid of it.
